Al and Al

Congratulations to Al and Al for winning the Liverpool Art Prize last night and to Elizabeth Willow for picking up the People's Prize.

The evening was another great success for Art in Liverpool who managed to pull off a rare stunt for this city – putting on a high quality event without public funding – 08 legacy at its Liverpool best. Good to see local businesses rallying around with support in kind and to Duncan Sheard Glass and Arthur Diamond for digging deep and putting up the cash prizes. Pity a few more people didn’t manage to find their way to the Novas CUC until after the award ceremony – geographically, to many people, the wonderfully restored arts centre still appears to be on another planet.

I now throw down the gauntlet to other businesses in and around Liverpool to ask themselves whether they could offer something to arts or cultural groups which might help them raise their profile. Doesn't have to be cash. Maybe just an afternoon once a month to give a bit of advice or direction. And perhaps a few more arty types might like to be a bit more up front in asking for help. Knock on a few doors, make a few phone calls, expect some rejection but perseverance will pay.
