A few weeks ago I suggested that us scousers could forget about our European escapades and instead bask in our own sunshine in the new pavement cafes sprouting up around the city. ![]()

You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!
The Wild Swans returned to play Liverpool last night at a gig that rocked Static Gallery to its bunting bedecked rafters. ![]()

Grosvenor went to great lengths to create appealing vistas throughout Liverpool One; to draw the eye of shoppers from gateways to anchor stores. To me, the streetscape they have created is a model for future city centre redevelopments. It's wide open, clean and visually stimulating. ![]()

For some, 08 is no less a tourist attraction than last year. The cannily named 08 Place, which we all thought might be rebranded into a more contemporary visitor centre, continues to plug 08 events.

There's a chronic lack of short term affordable parking in Ropewalks. That's not good for what the city has dubbed the 'independent quarter'. The only alternative to a ruthlessly administered parking fine is a meter (almost impossible to find) or an extortionate minimum charge in one of the multi-storeys sprouting up around the neighbourhood. ![]()

I understand that Liverpool City Council is to appoint a new tourism director to maximise the destination management of Liverpool city centre and its attractions. You can't fault the logic of that.

The Liverpool Design Festival is back. Last year at Novas, this year at The Crypt – both far too remote for my liking. To engage with a wider audience these shows and festivals need to be central.
Nonetheless, check out the web and get the dates in your diary. ![]()

Now that the time-expired 08 banner has finally come off the Figure Factory on the Strand, I am reminded what a dog of a building that is.
In the past I've suggested re-wrapping it with a banner letting people know where to look for up-coming culture in the city. Anyone else got any bright ideas on how this 'billboard' could be used? ![]()

How pleasant it is to be able to sit outside and enjoy a coffee and a snack in a boulevard setting.
Liverpool One has achieved the trick of making it cool to sit in the middle of a busy pedestrian thorough fare with a Cornish pasty or coffee in your hand – good food in a well-managed, convivial environment. A posers Paradise. ![]()

Get those vacant shops full of art. Now. No excuses. Much as I love Novas, it's a day's trek away from city life. Bring art to the people and let them engage with some culture without having to expend an ounce of effort. ![]()

Get yourself down to the Barfly on tomorrow, 3 July and treat yourself to a sweaty night out with the Salamanders and others.
Go unsigned for the night and get Glastonbury out of your system for the next twelve months. Check out www.barflyclub.com/liverpool for more info. ![]()
